Welcome to Lake Arts Project 2025

A Celebration of Healing, Art, and Storytelling of Veterans

Saturday, April 26th, 2025 7:00pm

Minnesota Ballet’s Studio FOUR

St. Louis County Depot

We are proud to present this deeply moving evening of dance!

Lake Arts Project 2025 is a collaborative performance honoring and supporting the stories of post-deployment service veterans through the transformative power of art.

This project is made possible through the dedicated partnerships of Feast of Crispian, Katharina Abderholden, and Minnesota Ballet—uniting veterans, choreographers, and professional dancers in a unique and healing collaboration.

About the Project

Lake Arts Project 2025 began just two weeks ago in Studio FOUR with two transformative workshops:

- April 15 – Storytelling through Movement, led by Katharina Abderholden

- April 17 – Shakespeare-Based Theater, led by Feast of Crispian

These sessions created expressive, safe spaces for sharing stories and exploring healing through creative movement and dramatic expression. The performances tonight are rooted in those shared moments.

Veteran Performers

April Jones-Harris is an Army veteran who served her country faithfully and honorably for 26 years.  After many years of selfless service, she began to realize that beneath the uniform was a woman and mother, labeled and no identity. Energy Depleted and lacking knowledge of self-care. She sought a path of spiritual development, growth, and self-healing -- a way to regain her voice. While April worked with Ann Randolph on her one-woman show “Hear My Sister’s Story” a seed was planted that would encourage April to take the stage and share more vibrant, raw feelings. April became infatuated with these non-traditional, non-therapeutic but therapeutic processes that helped her heal. She discovered an intense passion for performance art and storytelling.  After attending workshops with David Diamond (Theater for Living) and Life Stories Institute -Theater Lab with Buzz Mauro and Deb Gottesman, she began educating others on how to incorporate the post-trauma methods she used to heal into their lives. By seeking healing from trauma, April “performed to heal” in The Vagina Monologues and was featured in an HBO documentary with Jeffrey Wright, appropriately titled "We Are Not Done Yet”.  April is now continuing her service, but with a new mission in which she passionately supports individuals and communities as a professional “Accountability Partner,” facilitating self-resuscitation techniques, storytelling and creative art to maneuver through life’s toughest challenges.

Song Lyrics from A Strength Within

Kilimanjaro

Not every summit feels meant for me

Do I even deserve this

Whats the purpose of

Trying to set myself free

But the mountain is calling me

Kilimanjaro Kilimanjaro

Can’t help but follow

And at 17000 feet

I can finally breathe

See more clearly

my fears can be released

The climb is more than the height

Its my time to Claim the light

First steps are the hardest

For all of us

But we learn from the struggle

we carry each other,

To places we’d never know

Be brave enough to just keep going keep going

Cause the mountain is calling us

Together we’re stronger

Just Follow

Cause its not about reaching the top, its the way that you get there

Your strength helps me get there

And at 17000 feet

We can finally breathe

See more clearly

Our fears can be released

The climb is more than the height

Its our time to Claim the light

Don’t be afraid

To take it slow

Get absorbed in the stillness/quiet

Even if you feel lost

There’s always hope

We are loved, we are loved we are loved, and its boundless

April's Poem

Welcome to the moment where art meets service, discipline meets devotion, the battlefield meets thestage.

The Mission

for the dancer and the veteran side by side

You bend.

I march.

You rise.

I return.

Different uniforms same surrender.

Different stages same silence when the curtain falls or the orders end.

They told us:

Be sharp.

Be strong.

Be still.

Be gone.

Give your body to the cause.

Give your mind to the mission.

Give your soul… a raincheck,

we’ll get to that later.

And we did.

Dancer-

you laced up for perfection.

Every toe pointed in pain.

Every turn masked a tremble.

You learned to smile in stillness

while your spirit screamed behind the grace.

Veteran—

I saluted with precision.

I wore my pride like armor,

even when my heart went AWOL.

Even when the weight of silence

was louder than the war.

We both were trained to disappear.

To become the thing they needed

the body on cue, the presence in place, the sacrifice wrapped in silence.

But now we’re here.

Same room.

Same ache.

Same question:

Who am I without the mission?

Not ballet.

Not battle.

Not the stretch, the stance, the salute.

But the breath.

The break.

The becoming.

Now, we move not for them

but for us.

We move to remember

there is still a self beneath the service, a rhythm beneath the routine.

So, side by side we reclaim the stage. We reclaim the skin, the step, the stillness.

We dance.

We stand.

We fall.

We rise.
