Lake Arts Project teamed up with

Feast of Crispian

and

DNAWorks

Moving Beyond the Battlefield was an evening of dance and writing that brought together post-deployment service veterans, professional and pre-professional dancers, professional choreographers, local high school writers, musicians, and visual artists. Performances of Moving Beyond the Battlefield were held May 12 and 13, 2018 at Danceworks, Inc. in Milwaukee, WI.

In Moving Beyond the Battlefield, we worked closely to bridge the gap between professional artists and Veterans. We brought military Veterans and young artists (writers, musicians, visual artists, and dancers) together to better understand one another. Lake Arts Project hosted two workshops to create a space for the sharing of personal stories between the seemingly different groups.

The first workshop, which was led by Feast of Crispian, was based in theater practices and Shakespeare.

The second workshop, which was led by Adam McKinney, TCU Professor, DNAWORKS Co-Director, and former Ailey dancer, was based in storytelling through expressive and therapeutic movement.

Art, in all of its forms, has been highlighted as a strong tool in healing, particularly among military veterans with PTSD. The arts continue to prove their value of healing through healthy, non-violent expression.
